New Limits on Prop and Live Sports Betting in Certain States
Regulators and lawmakers in several US sports betting markets are considering new restrictions regarding prop and live betting. This is due to scrutiny on how live betting is offered. The states that are considering such action are New York, New Jersey, and Indiana. The concerns are centered around betting integrity as well as player protection.
New York Push for Ban on Live Betting
The debate has been raging in New York as Democratic member Linda Rosenthal introduced Assembly Bill A9343. This bill would prohibit the New York State Gaming Commission from accepting in-play wagers in sportsbooks. This would be an aggressive step by the state to restrict live betting, which has become a huge driver of sports betting over the last few years.
New Jersey is Set to Review Microbetting
Lawmakers are set to examine limits on certain types of sports betting. Senate Bill 4794 would prevent sportsbooks from offering microbetting. This proposal has not yet advanced beyond the committee stage, but the issue is gaining enough traction to get further discussion. It certainly shows a trend of lawmakers looking closer at in-play markets as part of efforts to balance consumer choice with regulatory oversight.
Indiana’s Decision to Add Restrictions on College Betting
State Sen. Andy Zay introduced legislation this week that would prohibit sportsbooks from offering prop bets involving college athletes. The proposal goes further and actually authorizes the Indiana Gaming Commission to fine bettors up to $10,000 if they place such a wager. Charlie Baker, the NCAA president, has noted that because of the fragmented state-by-state regulations, it is a bigger challenge than in other countries. Many states may prefer to keep decisions on sports betting props within their own jurisdiction.
